About | The Conflict Behind Bill 101
In the late 1960s, a linguistic crisis of unprecedented scale unfolded in the heart of Saint-Léonard (Quebec). From 1968 to 1969, French-speaking parents advocated for French-only schools, while members of the Italian community wished to preserve bilingual education. This conflict spread across Quebec, sparking widespread tension that eventually erupted into violence and culminated in a bloody riot. La bataille de Saint-Léonard tells the story of Raymond Lemieux and Mario Barone, two remarkable yet overlooked figures from humble beginnings, who clashed with resilience and conviction despite the heavy toll on their family and careers. Their struggle reshaped Quebec's future, leading to the adoption of the Charter of the French Language (Bill 101).
